What Is Spinal Decompression, and Can It Help Your Back?

If you've been told your only option is back surgery, it's worth knowing about a gentler path first. Spinal decompression is a calm, hands-off table treatment that's helped many of our Windsor patients avoid the operating room entirely.

So what actually happens during a session?

You lie face down on a special table. The table slowly and gently stretches your lower back in a controlled rhythm. There's no cracking, no sudden twisting, and no pain. Most people relax so much they nearly fall asleep.

Why does it work?

When a disc bulges or herniates, it can press on a nerve, that's the shooting pain down your leg we call sciatica. Decompression gently opens up the space between the bones, taking the pressure off that nerve and giving the disc room to heal back into place.

  • Herniated or bulging discs
  • Sciatica (pain shooting down the leg)
  • Spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spine)
  • Chronic lower back pain that hasn't responded to other care

I've watched patients walk in barely able to stand and walk out smiling after a few weeks of decompression. It's one of the most rewarding tools in the clinic.

Is it safe?

Yes. It's one of the most researched, gentle techniques in chiropractic care. It was built specifically as a safe alternative to surgery for disc problems. We always start with a full assessment to make sure it's the right fit for your body.

Most patients feel real relief within 4–6 sessions. We measure your progress each visit so you can actually see the improvement, not just feel it.

The takeaway

If surgery has been mentioned but you're not ready, decompression is a calm, proven step worth trying first.
